Watching Knocked Up right now.

And I thought to myself, the way Judd Apatow uses the people that star in his movies, is like a gang of the same people.

And don’t get me wrong, they’re funny. Really funny, but it’s the same people.

It’s like that show Home Movies where all of Brendon’s little movies are made with Jason and Melissa.

Just an observation.

Many directors who have the ability to do this do so. Tim Burton’s movies almost always star Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, Alfred Hitchcock often featured Cary Grant and Tippi Hedren in his works, Scorsese flicks frequently star DiCaprio, Kirosawa and Mifune… the list goes on.

Directors build relationships with actors and sort of figure out what “works” for those particular players, so to many it feels as if they can make better and better work each time, without having to spend as much time crossing the extra hurdles of getting the actors in the right “zone” for their performances. It’s also a reflection of the professional relationships that organically develop industry-wide: directors generally go back to work with the same producers for each project, production companies generally get their projects distributed by the same distribution companies, distribution companies can generally rely on going back to the same theaters/chains in order to get them to screen the flicks… well, you get the point.

It’s not an entirely different business from anything else; people who like to work together find ways to work together whenever a relevant project comes up that they can collaborate on.
